The first five chapters are from the journal of the main character, Sophie. The sixth chapter, however, is from her cousin Cody's dog-log. You do not learn that Sophie is an orphan until Cody writes it in his dog-log. I figure this is because Sophie thinks of her current mother and father as her real parents. According to Cody's dog-log she has been with them for three years. the author did not put this in the early chapters because for one thing, the purpose of Sophie's journal is to record her trip across the ocean in her Uncle Dock's boat, The Wanderer. For another thing, if she thinks of herself as their real daughter, then Sophie really has n oreason to write in her own journal that her biological parents are off where ever they are (the book does not indicate at this point whether they or dead or what). In Cody's dog-log, the author made sure that Cody included the fact that his and Sophie's Uncle Stew refers to Sophie as "the orphan" and has, ah, violent thoughts toward Stew when he calls her that. This is a good introduction both to Uncle Stew and Cousin Cody. We can see already that Uncle Stew is not an accepting person and that Cousin Cody is going to be Sophie's advocate.
"That's what Uncle Stew calls Sophie: the orphan. i want to slug him when he calls her that.
Sophie talks about my aunt and uncle as if they are her real parents, even though they are only her adopted parents and she's only been with them three years." (pg29, Creech)
